Plus-Sized People Fetishized During Fall?

Alright, let’s talk about the plus size community for a moment and the obsession with us. I use the term us because it’s no secret that I’m part of this community. Before I get to what the title is about, I just want to discuss for a moment the obsession with the community since it does go with the main discussion for today.

People are obsessed with the plus sized community in two main ways: their health and their size. When I say health, I mean the fake doctors all over the internet. The ones who think that just because someone is bigger that means they’re unfit. They’ll literally down talk you and then try to tell you how to lose weight. It’s crazy how often you see those types of comments under pictures of people who are minding their own damn business. You know, like the commenter should’ve done? I can take it back to the Nike plus mannequin. Comments stating it looks like the mannequin can’t run and has many diseases. How would you know that? The mannequin may not be real, but the person who has a similar body type is real. Sadly, as long as we have fake doctors and trolls on the internet, the “diagnoses” aren’t going to stop.

When I say people are obsessed with size, that can be considered as kind of a vague statement. At the same time, it means just that. They’re obsessed with the PLUS in plus-sized. This is where I go into the fetishize part. It’s almost like you get two different sides of a coin. One side dislikes the community because of size and the other side likes the community because of the side. Clearly, the world isn’t just made up of people who are fake doctors and people who fetishize the community. You have the people who respect and treat us like regular humans as you should, but for the sake of this blog, we’re just talking about people who fit either side of the coin. People who are obsessed with the size of those who are plus sized love the thickness, softness, etc. Don’t get me wrong, this is fine…until it’s not.

It’s fall time and you know what they say when the cooler months come around…big boy/girl season. Fetishizing the plus community happens all year round, but you see it a lot in the fall and winter when people want to be around us the most. It’s colder so now it’s time to take us out like they do their winter coats, but that’s not how that works. You can’t suddenly want to be all over us and then throw us back “in your closet” once summer hits. Online I see people in the community saying “it’s my season!” Joke or not, any season is our season.

Do I think the plus-size community is fetishized and obsessed over once fall hits? Absolutely. However, if you can’t love us during the Spring and Summer, then you don’t deserve us during the fall and winter.

  1. Preach! I had a doctor decide that I had a bunch of weight related diagnoses without ever examining me. Turns out I didn’t have a single one of them. Which he may have realized if he took the time to listen rather than judge. Weight is a number, but it doesn’t define who we are and definitely doesn’t always define our health!!

      • The worst part was that this was a “functional medicine/holistic health” doctor. He was the worst one of all. Took one look at me and decided I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, and a bunch of other issues. I don’t have a single one of those and the worst part was … I wasn’t there for anything related to that!! And people wonder why our healthcare system sucks. Smh is right!!!
