If you’re a creative person and you’ve always liked the idea of working for yourself, you may be considering the option of going freelance. But that can feel scary when you’re not too sure where to start, or you’ve been in the same career for a long time. The idea of starting over or building up your own small business can feel intimidating. However, it doesn’t have to be. Instead, you can look to go freelance and make a success of it on your own terms. Let’s take a look at how.

1. Dream Up a Plan
First of all, you need a plan. Think about what you want to do and how you’d ideally like it to work. You need to know what services you plan to offer and come up with some prices. You may also want to focus on a niche, too. Whether you’re writing, designing, or doing anything in between, make sure that you really focus on the specifics of how you’ll position yourself as a freelancer.
2. Create Your Brand and Website
From here, you’re then in the perfect position to build your brand and website. You’ll want to come up with your brand name and some designs for your branding. Think of the colors, fonts, and a logo that you’d like to use. You can then buy your domain name and choose a template for your website, ready to go live. This can showcase your services to the world and give you a hub to market from. Don’t forget to secure your social media handles too!
3. Get Everything You Need
The next thing you need to do is focus on all of the tools and equipment that you need to put in place. You should have your computer and phone ready to go, but you may need different software packages to work on, a good camera, and a SanDisk SD card to work with too. That way, you have all the equipment you need to get started, and you’ll be ready to carry out your work.
4. Start to Pitch for Work
At this point, you can then start to pitch. You may want to think about building up your portfolio first, which may include existing work you have done or even free pieces that you do for clients. Then, you can pitch to clients and start to drum up some interest in your services. This can be daunting, but it’s basically a numbers game. Keep pitching, don’t give up, and someone will be interested!
5. Network, Connect, and Grow!
Then from here, it’s all about growing! You need to make sure that you’re networking, getting your name out there, and getting in front of clients that you’d like to work with. It will take time, but you will be able to build your portfolio, grow your expertise, and get the income that you’re looking for too! So get started, and good luck, it will be an exciting journey!
Starting as a freelancer may seem scary, but hopefully these tips will help you with where to start! Soon, you’ll be on your way to being a successful freelancer and you’ll be glad you started.
