Dear diary,
Two diary entries in one month!? Whew, I must have a lot to say…and I do! I don’t know if I’m the only one, but this Black History Month just doesn’t seem to be the same. What I mean is, it just doesn’t really feel like Black History Month. I feel that as the years go by, the month within itself is just dwindling and people are caring less and less. The thought of that is a little scary to me.

I’ve been thinking and I feel that once you graduate from High school, unless it’s something you particularly decide to focus on in college or even on your own, you’re not forced to study black history so it doesn’t become as big of a huge deal. That’s not to say that no one cares anymore or doesn’t see BHM as special, but you’re just not forced to read up on anything or make projects. You have to make the choice yourself now to educate beyond the basics and to some that takes a lot of effort. It’s not as if I haven’t seen ANYTHING from anyone, but it’s certainly not the abundance of creativity or information that I’ve seen in the past. Even I, myself, have not had the energy to put in as much as I’ve done in the past.
I’m still going to keep my hopes up that we still continue to keep black history alive because there are so many more people in history to be discovered and celebrated that might never get their shine because they weren’t as “big” or as “important” as the ones we have memorized in our minds.
If Black History Month does die out, I hope it’s because we’re not being celebrated or recognized for a month anymore…but every single day of the year.
