As an introvert, being around many people can become very draining and take a lot out of you. It’s important to take time for yourself after being around a group of people.
The holiday season can be particularly challenging for introverts with its abundance of social gatherings and festivities. Here’s how to navigate this busy time while protecting your energy.

Create Peaceful Spaces
As an introvert, your space is your safe place. It’s where you should feel peace and calm away from the craziness. If you’re at someone else’s home for the holidays, you don’t have that safe space that you’d have if you were in your own home. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t create one. Find a room to designate as your calm space when things become overwhelming. Often times that may be the bathroom. Depending on where you are, that could become your parent’s room or your old bedroom if it’s still available. Make sure to make your own space cozy and safe as well with beautiful lights and things that you love for the holidays.
Set Healthy Boundaries
Boundary is the word of the season and it’s okay to set one…or many. Plan for any social events and limit how many commitments you make. This means that people can’t invite you to events last minute, and if they do, you have the right to say no. The holidays are also filled with many events, and even if you have a full day, make sure to give yourself enough time in between them to recharge. As an introvert, being around a lot of people can become exhausting. It’s important to recharge for that reason. This also means you’ll have to say no to some things to allow yourself that time. Lastly, when it comes to boundaries and holiday dinners/events, don’t be afraid to leave early if you become tired. Again, being around many people can become exhausting, so it’s okay to decide that you’ve stayed long enough and need to leave.
Alternative Ways to Celebrate
Enjoying the holidays is always fun when you’re with friends and family, but it can be fun alone as well. Alternate between how you do your festive events. Some events are great to do with others, and some you can participate in alone. Being alone won’t make it any less fun, but it will give you the peace you need while still enjoying yourself. Regarding group activities, if the group is too big for your liking, it’s okay to skip out on it. Try only doing events with a group size that won’t seem as overwhelming.
Self-Care Strategies
Practicing self-care is important in general, but especially when things get as hectic as they do during the holidays. As an introvert, the fact that crowds are almost everywhere may seem anxiety-inducing and tiring just to think about. Take breaks anytime you feel they’re needed and make sure to practice stress management techniques for when you’re overwhelmed. Check out these ways for self-care during the holidays for more tips!
Communication Tips
Communication is important in all types of relationships. Don’t be afraid to tell your friends and family when overwhelmed. If they know you’re introverted and get overwhelmed easily, then they should understand. Even if they’re not aware, it’s okay to let them know and they will understand. Again, remember it’s okay to say no to events and take time for yourself.
Remember, the holidays don’t have to be all about big gatherings. Finding a meaningful way to celebrate while honoring your introverted nature is perfectly valid. You can enjoy the holiday season and still protect your boundaries.
