10 Women Who’ve Made HERstory In The Past Decade

Knock Knock!

Who’s there?

Women’s History Month!

A lot has gone on, but let’s not forget that March is still Women’s History Month! A lot has been forgotten and slipped our minds, but I refuse to let this month just slip by without doing some honorable mentions of some amazing women! There have been some boss ladies of the past, but what about the ones that have made HERstory just this past decade!? They’re worth mentioning 100% and deserve the spotlight. So, step away from other news and take a look at these amazing boss ladies of the decade!

Ava Duvernay

Ava is the first woman of color to direct a live-action film! Right out the gate, she’s a boss! Also, in 2012 she won the directing award at the Sundance Festival for her film Middle of Nowhere. This put her as the first black woman to win the award in the dramatic competition. She has won so many more awards and has so many movies. She’s helping pave a way for black people and women of color and that’s why she’s such a boss!

Serena Williams

It’s obvious that Serena Williams has made HERstory pass this decade, but we just have to talk about the accomplishment(s) that she has made within the decade. One being in 2017 when she won the Australian Open WHILE SHE WAS PREGNANT. Did you read that?? You might want to read it again if not. That’s pretty badass! I’ve never been pregnant before, but something tells me that I’d be lounging in my house and not winning competitions that’s for sure. She will always continue to make HERstory and amaze us with whatever she takes on!

Kathryn Bigelow

If you’ve never heard of her, then you’re about to! In 2010, she became the first woman to ever win an Academy Award for best director for the film The Hurt Locker. What a way to start the decade! I’m not sure why it took this long, but I’m looking forward to more recognition for women in this next decade!

Jennifer Garner

Some of you might be seeing her name and wondering “what has she done?” Well, I’ll tell you! In 2013, Jennifer and Halle Berry both went before the California State Assembly on Public Safety to testify. What did they testify you ask? Well, they wanted lawmakers to pass a bill that protected the children of figures who are in the public from the paparazzi. Guess what happened…the law was passed! Talk about girl power! Jennifer has continued to work to help the children being an ambassador for Save The Children and a supporter or Baby2Baby!

Lupita Nyong’o

Where do we begin with this amazing woman? She went from being unknown to being the center of attention! Lupita received her first claim to fame when she was casted in the movie 12 Years A Slave. Since then, she has been in an abundance of movies like Star Wars, Black Panther, and US. She continues to shine bright with her beauty, talent, and kind heart. She has partnered with Wildaid to help protect the elephants, worked with Mother Health International, and has written a children’s book titled Sulwe. She is the definition of goals for how a person should be!

Michelle Obama

I know she hasn’t done a lot, but I thought why not add her to the list?

Ok, now that we had that laugh..let properly start off by saying…MRS. MICHELLE OBAMA!! I mean what hasn’t she done?? I think once you become the first lady and help run the entire country, that’s enough street cred right? Well, of course she has to stack the ladder! Besides starting the decade off by being the most amazing FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN first lady we’ve had, she’s an author, amazing dresser, lawyer, and everything in between. She has done more than made HERstory, and will always be a woman that I look up to when it comes to being a girl boss!

Awkwafina

Nora Lum also known as Awkwafina became the 2nd Asian Woman to host Saturday Night Live in 2018 (we’ve got to work on our representation people!). She is helping show that Asian women are slaying the game too. She’s starred in box office hits such as Crazy Rich Asians and The Farewell. She will continue to make HERStory and widen the spot for representation.

Simone Biles

A round of applause for this badass girl making HERstory! She has a combination of 30 Olympic and World Championship medals, which makes her America’s most decorated gymnast. She’s so bomb that she has had three moves officially named after her..umm can you say boss moves!? Let’s not forget that in the 2016 Olympics, she became the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals at single Games. She has slayed the decade and I can’t wait to see what she does this next decade!

Melina Matsoukas

Losing You, We Found Love, Formation…what do all of these music videos have in common? This amazing woman has directed ALL of them. She can direct anything from music videos, to TV shows like Insecure to movies like Queen and Slim that came out in 2019. Who knows what else she’s going to direct in this next decade. I guess we’ll just have to watch and see!

These women are just 10 in thousandths more women who have made HERstory in the past decade! Are any of these women your favorite? Add to the list and tell me a woman who’s made HERstory in the past decade that you admire!
